School notes 14th December

Snow Day

The students of Cnoc Mhuire were extremely disappointed when the school had to close on Monday the 11th due to the treacherous road conditions and inclement weather. Whilst every effort is always made to open the school the safety of our students is paramount and is rightfully prioritised. The Leaving cert students made the most of the long weekend with many teachers reporting that these students had completed extra work on the day off. Thankfully all students and staff returned safely to the school when it reopened on Tuesday morning.

Ring Christmas Bells

The Cnoc Mhuire Christmas Show “Ring Christmas Bells” took place in St Mary’s Church in Granard on Tuesday the 19th of December. The hours spent rehearsing and preparing for this show were evident to all who were privileged to attend. Cnoc Mhuire has a strong tradition when it comes to Musical performances and this show once again showed the talents of the Music students in Cnoc Mhuire. Former Cnoc Mhuire student Eileen Coyle performed on the night and showed the present students what opportunities their musical talents can offer them. Huge congrats to all students who performed on the night and special mention must go to our Music Department of Ms Mills, Ms Reilly and Mr Devine. Without the dedication of our teachers these events would not be possible.

European languages week:
Our school offers 2 European languages Spanish and French. Over the past 2 weeks our students participated in a variety of in-class activities as part of European languages week- poster competitions, projects, quizzes, games etc. All junior Spanish classes enjoyed interesting presentations on ‘Espana y la vida espanola’ compiled by Senor Leon and our TY Spanish students Roc and Lucia. TYs enjoyed cooking French and Spanish specialities.
Our 5th year students of French and Spanish attended a workshop on the importance of European languages presented by Louise Kane from GLT. Also this week Leaving cert students are availing of French and Spanish mock orals in preparation for their Mocks in February and Leaving Cert orals in April. Thanks to all our languages teachers for their hard work and for organising European languages week for our students.

Girls Football

Unfortunately the U16 girls football game scheduled for Wednesday last had to be cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch. This game against the Bower of Athlone will now be played in the New Year. The Senior Girls were also due to play Clara on Thursday last. Unfortunately this game was also cancelled on Thursday morning due to a waterlogged pitch.

Senior Options Talk

Thanks to all the parents and students who attended our Senior Options Night which took place on Wednesday last. Thanks to Ms Stephens our Programmes Coordinator who spoke about the Transition Year and LCVP options and to Ms Reilly our Guidance Counsellor who spoke about the subject options available at senior cycle.

Ceili Band

On Thursday last the Ceili Band travelled to Laurel Lodge Nursing home where they performed some Christmas Classics for the residents. Thanks to all the students who performed and to Ms Bratten who accompanied the students on the day.

U14 Boys Football

On Thursday last the U14 Boys footballers took on Nobber in the North Leinster Quarter final. The opening exchanges were closely contested but the Granard lads put in an excellent team performance and took control of the game winning on a scoreline of 4-11 to 4-04. Most impressive were Micheal Hynes, Cameron Cassidy, Daire Madden and Oisin Flynn. Well done to the lads and their coach Mr Swaine who now progress to the North Leinster semi-final.

5th Year LCVP class Fundraise for Pieta House

On Thursday December 14th, a group of 5th year students held a bake sale  as a fundraiser in aid of Pieta House. This was organised as a follow up to a recent presentation given to the students by Siohan, a member of Pieta House Athlone. The fundraiser was a great success raising over €200. Thanks to all for supporting this worthy cause.
